The Ernest Hemingway Symposium 2012: Hemingway's Politics
During the 2012 Ernest Hemingway Symposium, we come together to question conventional wisdom that Ernest Hemingway was apolitical, perhaps above the push and pull of the tides and currents of the outside world. After reading Stephen Cooper’s The Politics of Ernest Hemingway, one of our 2012 presenters commented, “Dry, but well done. It basically says that EH was a mid-western Republican who loved the underdog.”
However, no one can manage to live completely outside the politics times of his or her lifetime. Our keynote speaker Peter Moreira asserts that when he began his mission to China, Hemingway “had just finished not only his biggest novel but also his work with more probing political analysis than anything he had ever written before…in For Whom the Bell Tolls [he had] constructed what Jeffery Meyers called ‘the greatest political novel in American literature'.” The 2012 Ernest Hemingway Symposium should be anything but dry.
