The Great Books Book Club
Evolution of Marxism (continued)
Wednesday, June 14, 7:00 pm
Back by popular demand, Professor Lee Brown will again lead a discussion at the Community Library Great Books Book Club on the evolution of Marxism, a force which changed the course of civilization. The discussion will include the works of philosophers Hegel, Marx, and Engels. Recommended readings include the very slim volume, The Communist Manifesto and Professor Brown’s book Rules and Conflict.
Karl Marx (1818-1883) greatly influenced economics, philosophy, sociology, and history. Born in Prussia, he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy in Berlin and later worked as a journalist in London. His most famous works were The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital, which was completed by the philosopher Friedrich Engels after Marx died.
Professor Lee Brown attained a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the University of Minnesota and was a professor at San Diego State and Grossmont College for almost 30 years, receiving the Outstanding Educator Award. Dr. Brown was a Fulbright Scholar and is listed in Who’s Who of American Scholars.
The Great Books Book Club meets monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday, at the Community Library and is free and open to all.

The Horse's Mouth
Sun Valley Visual Arts Forum Film Showing
Thursday, June 22, 6:00 pm
The Horse's Mouth (1958) stars Alec Guinness and Kay Walsh and was directed by Ronald Neame. A somewhat vulgar but dedicated painter searches for the perfect realization of his artistic vision, much to the chagrin of others. Gulley Jimson is broke, difficult, conniving, uncouth, and a welcher -- but an artist.
The visions in his head may not really satisfy him when realized, but the quest continues, for the perfect wall. After turning the wall of an unsuspecting family's living room into a national treasure, Gulley finds -- in a bombed out church scheduled for demolition -- THE wall upon which he can finally realize his vision. Offered in conjunction with the Visual Arts Forum..
