Among the Craters of the Moon:
The Life and Adventures of Robert W. Limbert

A Film Presented and Discussed by Steve Wursta

Thursday, January 19, 6:00 pm

Robert W. Limbert was perhaps the most colorful western character since Buffalo Bill. Sharpshooter, explorer, and visionary, Limbert challenged Al Capone and his gangsters to a gunfight, built Redfish Lake Lodge in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains, proposed a St. Moritz style resort for Hailey, Idaho (near the future Sun Valley Resort), and explored the unmapped lava flows now known as Craters of the Moon National Monument.

In 2004, filmmaker, photojournalist, and firefighter/paramedic Steve Wursta began further research on the life of Robert Limbert. In the spring of 2005 Limbert's daughter, Margaret Lawrence, gave Wursta additional boxes of her father’s original documents filling in many missing aspects of Limbert’s amazing life. For the first time, Robert Limbert’s never before seen photographs, motion pictures, and documents have been assembled into a one-hour documentary film detailing his adventures and the impact he made on the state of Idaho.

Ladakh, Land of Many Passes: The Landscape and Economy of the Western Himalayas
Wendy Pabich
Co-sponsor: Environmental Resource Center Armchair Adventure Series

Tuesday, January 26, 6:00 pm

Ladakh, a remote and starkly beautiful high-desert landscape in the Western Himalayas, is utterly remote yet dotted with villages, mud houses, stupas, gompas, monasteries, animals, and people. Ladakh is rapidly transitioning from a sustainable agrarian society to a tourist-based economy, and facing a myriad of challenges.

The slide show and lecture will feature images of the extraordinary Himalayan scenery and discuss the development issues facing Ladakh.

Wendy Pabich, Ph.D., is an environmental scientist, educator and artist living in Hailey, Idaho. She is obsessed with all things water. Her passion for mountains, outdoor adventure and other cultures has taken her to places near and far. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College, Duke University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In this slide show and lecture, Wendy Pabich explores the region of Ladakh, known as "The Land of Many Passes."

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
Wednesday, January 25, 7:00 pm

One of the English language's foremost satirists, Jonathan Swift used his wit and humor to write stories and verse that were at once both entertaining and sharp jabs at the political and social institutions of his day.

Gulliver’s Travels, a tale of a land of six-inch tall Lilliputians, is the subject of discussion at this month’s Community Library Great Books Book Club.

The Great Books Book Club meets monthly, generally on the fourth Wednesday, at the Community Library and is free and open to all.
