Wednesday, February 8, 6:00 pm

A special screening of the film Water Polo: Beneath the Surface is being presented by the film maker, Dawn Young, the composer, Jon Pousette-Dart, and Phebe & Paul Wilcox in conjunction with the Wood River YMCA. This exciting documentary features Wolf Wigo, captain of the U.S. Olympic water polo team in 1996, 2000, and 2004. It is amazing how strenuous and fast moving water polo is! It is actually considered the most physically demanding of all sports. It is very popular in California and in Europe where top players enjoy rock star adulation and lifestyles.

Jon Maksik, headmaster of the Community School and members of the cast
of Company of Fools’ production of Hedda Gabler
Tuesday, February 21, 6:00 pm

Join Jon Maksik and members of the cast for a discussion about the thoughts and concepts behind this masterpiece, written over one hundred years ago. Jon will bring his wonderful insights about the man who wrote the play, the times during which it was written and the social significance of this classic play.

This is the perfect accompaniment to your evening in the theatre with Hedda Gabler. See the play prior to the discussion and bring your own point of view to the dialogue or use it as a pre-performance introduction to the play. Find out why the play you read in high school is still inspiring audiences today.

The Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell
Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 pm

James Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) is the choice for this month's meeting of the Great Books Book Club. Johnson, perhaps the greatest English writer of his day, was profiled by Boswell, who preserved the wit and brilliance of Johnson's conversation, the sharpness of his opinions on people, politics, and literature, and the vigor of his personality. Johnson was famous for his massive Dictionary of the English Language, his book Lives of the English Poets, and his criticisms and satirical essays such as The Vanity of Human Wishes. His writing style marked a high point in English prose, and he wrote with a sense of the moral and intellectual responsibilities of authorship.

The Great Books Book Club meets monthly, generally on the fourth Wednesday, at the Community Library and is free and open to all.
