Virtual Tibet
Orville Schell
sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts
Monday, April 3, 7:00 pm
Orville Schell is the Dean of the School of Journalism at UC Berkeley as well as one of the country's best informed and most thoughtful observers on China. Schell has served on the board of Human Rights Watch, as a frequent contributor for everything from 60 Minutes to Frontline and has published fourteen books.
With thirty years of experience covering China 's changing political and economic climate, Schell turned his eye to Tibet and the West's century's long fascination with this country on the roof of the world. His book, Virtual Tibet, tracks the history of our vision of Tibet from Shangri-La to Brad Pitt. "The paradox," writes Schell, "is that even as it has become more physically accessible, the real Tibet has grown ever more virtual."

Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion
Film Screening
sponsored by the College of Southern Idaho
Thursday, April 20, 6:00 pm
The College of Southern Idaho sponsors a free public screening of this award-winning documentary in conjunction with “The Art of Tibet,” a multidisciplinary project of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
Ten years in the making, this award-winning documentary was filmed during nine journeys throughout Tibet, India, and Nepal. Cry of the Snow Lion brings audiences to the long-forbidden "rooftop of the world" with images from rarely-seen rituals in remote monasteries to horse races with Khamba warriors, and from brothels and slums in the holy city of Lhasa to magnificent Himalayan peaks still traveled by nomadic yak caravans. The dark secrets of Tibet’s recent past are chronicled through riveting personal stories, interviews, and a collection of undercover and archival images never before assembled in film.
