Thursday, November 17, 6:00 pm

The End of Suburbia takes a look at the suburban culture of America and its reliance on fossil fuel energy sources. Some scientists warn we are facing an inevitable decline in the availability of fossil fuels during the early part of this century. The End of Suburbia explores the American way of life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era when global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply.

Meditations on First Philosophy by René Descartes
Wednesday, November 30, 7:00 pm

René Descartes (1596-1650), a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, is often called the father of modern philosophy. The inventor of analytic geometry, he developed a detailed account of the physical universe in terms of matter and motion. He was a pioneer in the attempt to formulate simple, universal laws of motion that govern all physical change.

Descartes wrote three major works. The first was Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and Seeking Truth in the Sciences (1637), commonly known as the Discourse on Method. The others were Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), perhaps his most important work, and Principles of Philosophy (1644). His philosophy became known as Cartesianism.

It was Descartes who coined the now-famous phrase, "cogito ergo sum," I think, therefore I am.

The Great Books Book Club meets monthly, generally on the fourth Wednesday, at the Community Library and is free and open to all.
