Chris Millspaugh, Regional History Librarian
Thursday, January 20, 5:00 pm

2005 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Community Library Association, Inc., a nonprofit corporation established to provide free library services to the community without using tax funds. Funded by donations and proceeds from the Gold Mine Thrift Shop, The Community Library is unique in its beginnings and approach.

Chris Millspaugh, Regional History Librarian at The Community Library, will present a multimedia program on how the library began and evolved. The program will feature photographs from the past, audio clips of former Board members, and video clips from television interviews featuring founders Clara Spiegel, Jean Lane Moritz, and others.

Doug Scott
Thursday, January 27, 7:00 pm

Wilderness lobbyist, strategist, and historian Doug Scott has written a book examining how America has preserved more than 100 million acres of diverse wilderness areas in 44 states. In this program, Scott will discuss our past and current visions on the value of wilderness and will explore its place in our culture.

Doug Scott served on the board of the organizing group for the original Earth Day, worked as a lobbyist with the Wilderness Society in Washington DC, and was Conservation Director and later Associate Executive Director for the Sierra Club. He has influenced legislation adding many areas to the National Wilderness Preservation System, including the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act (1975), the Endangered American Wilderness Act (1978), the Central Idaho Wilderness Act (1980), Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (1980), and the California Desert Protection Act (1994).

Series Continues: Thursdays
, February 3, 10, 17, & 24 at 4:00 pm

A time honored tradition resumes with weekly free showings of classic ski films in the library's lecture room. Each Thursday at 4 pm, enjoy films in which skiing footage, shot in and around Sun Valley, is featured.

Sun Valley has been the setting for a number of ski films, and expert local skiers were often used as stunt doubles and instructors. Films and photos related to Sun Valley are archived in The Community Library's Regional History Department.
