Photo of Hemingway at party

This black and white photograph of Ernest Hemingway surrounded by smiling friends at a party was taken by photographer Lloyd Arnold in 1939. Hemingway is shown center right in the photograph, looking on while the champagne glass in his right hand is filled by Tony Richter who is standing to Hemingway's right.

In the left of the photo and to Richter's right are Clara Spiegel, Tillie Arnold, and Nin Van Guilder respectively. In the right of the photo and on Hemingway's left are Taylor Williams and Eleanor "Cookie"Young, the three with their arms around one another in comradeship.

The occasion was a "Good Medicine Party" for Nin Van Guilder, wife of Gene Van Guilder, a close friend of Hemingway's who was killed in a hunting accident. An excerpt from Hemingway's moving eulogy to Gene Van Guilder was later placed upon Hemingway's own memorial in Sun Valley, Idaho.
