"The Great Books" Book Club
On the Nature of Things by Lucretius

Titus Lucretius Carus, the Roman poet and follower of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, is known chiefly for his six volume work De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things). Some credit Lucretius with being the first to widely promote the concepts that matter is made up of atoms and that organisms in nature evolve. Gary Hunt from Iconoclast Bookstore will lead this month's discussion of On the Nature of Things.

Bookclub discussions are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM and are open to all. (Note: There will be no meeting in January, 2003).

• De Rerum Natura An abridged online version to complement the full text of On the Nature of Things found at the Internet Classics Archive at MIT or available for download from Project Gutenberg.
• Lucretius Information on his life, philosopy, and legacy from the University of Tennesee at Martin.
• The Epicurean Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson, as well as Lucretius, subscribed to the ideas of the Greek philosopher Epicurus.

Diane Josephy Peavey and her husband, John, run the Flat Top Sheep Co. ranch in Carey, Idaho. Gifted with the ability to paint the images of the land with her words, Peavey has collected a series of short essays, grouped by the seasons, into a volume that both entertains and informs the reader about the vagaries of modern ranch life.
